Hayley taking folks on a virtual tour of the Ōtākaro Orchard
Hayley Guglietta as part of their 2023 Pledge me campaign taking folks on a virtual tour of the Food Resilience Network’s Ōtākaro Orchard hub—Christchurch’s pioneering example of regenerative, climate-adaptive infrastructure. Since breaking ground in 2019, the site has developed features like a living roof, solar heating, composting toilets, greywater reuse, and stormwater retention basins. Serving as a permaculture education centre and youth engagement platform, it directly supports council climate strategies. To wrap up, she emphasized that communities should build social infrastructure before disasters strike, pointing to Christchurch’s pre-established networks as crucial during the COVID‑19 lockdown, and argued that collaboration between local momentum and council support is “when the magic happens”
